NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Register for NVivo 8 Webinar July 31

Sponsored by the Center for Faculty Excellence

Hosted by QSR International, the Center for Faculty Excellence is sponsoring a Web demonstration of NVivo 8 on Thursday, July 31, from 10:00 -11:00 a.m. in the Old Cafeteria Complex, Room 1632.

To register, go to the Summer 2008 CFE Workshop Calendar.

According to QSR International:
“If you need to handle very rich information, where deep levels of analysis on both small and large volumes of data are required, NVivo 8 is your solution. It removes many of the manual tasks associated with analysis, like classifying, sorting and arranging information, so you have more time to explore trends, build and test theories and ultimately arrive at answers to questions.”

The program will provide an overview of the key features of NVivo 8 software and their potential use in the research process. There will also be an opportunity for questions during the session.

To learn more about the Center for Faculty Excellence, go to the CFE Web site at http://www.ecu.edu/cs-acad/cfe/

Request Free Software Now for Fall Students

Virtual Computing Lab helps students save time and money

Request an image of the software your students need for class by completing the Virtual Computer Lab Image Request form from the ITCS Help Desk online service request system.

Once a professor requests a software image for a class, students can log in to the Virtual Computing Lab (VCL) from home or residence hall and choose the software image created for their course. Beginning fall semester, there will also be general purpose images available to students that include Microsoft Office, SAS, SPSS, Mathematica, AutoCAD, Adobe products and more. VCL images can be accessed by Windows, Linux and Max users.

To send an image request, log in to the ITCS service request system (see link above), and look on the left side of the page. In the Request Software section, click the link labeled, Virtual Computing Lab Image Request.

Requests should be submitted at least two weeks in advance to ensure that software is available.

For more information on the Virtual Computing Lab and to become familiar with the license policies for software programs, go to www.ecu.edu/vcl/.

SPSS/Mathematica/NVivo Licenses Arriving Soon
Contact ITCS for upgrade information

Faculty, staff and students using SPSS, Mathematica, and/or NVivo may have begun receiving expiration notices for this software. Don’t panic! The license codes for these software packages don’t expire until August 23, and we are expecting arrival of new license codes shortly. We will distribute the new codes to users as soon as we receive them.

NOTE
If you are using SPSS 15, ITCS recommends that you upgrade to version 16 as soon as possible as technical support for version 15 will be limited.

Individuals interested in upgrading to Mathematica 6.0.3 can submit an IT Help Desk Request at https://ithelp.ecu.edu and scroll to ‘Request Software' in the left menu.

NVivo 7 users are encouraged to upgrade to version 8; however, version 7 will still be supported.

More Information
Please contact Gloria Schwartz (328.9129; schwartzg@ecu.edu ) if you have any questions or need assistance with campus-licensed software.

TIPS AND HOW-TO'S

Subscribe to RSS Feeds Using Internet Explorer 7

Information delivered straight to you

NOTE: Internet Explorer 7 is NOT compatible with IDXWeb. Do not download this upgrade if you use the IDXWeb software. However, in coming issues of the Technology Digest, we'll be discussing other ways to subscribe to RSS feeds.

Wikis, blogs, RSS feeds. Many of the upgrades ECU is implementing this summer include these very useful tools. But are these features easy to use? Can they make your office more productive? Should you learn to use them?

The answer is Yes! Yes! YES!

Over the next several issues of Technology Digest, we’ll look at how you can use each of these tools to maximize work time and have a bit of fun along the way. This month we’ll show you how to use Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) to subscribe to RSS feeds.

What is an RSS Feed?
Just like a magazine subscription delivered to your postal mailbox, an RSS (Real Simple Syndication) feed is delivered to your computer. You only need subscribe once to an RSS feed and updates are automatically saved in the Favorites Center folder on the IE7 toolbar.

RSS feeds are usually available on sites that frequently update information, such as weblogs, online magazines or news sites. Read on to learn how you can use Internet Explorer 7 to manage this syndicated content.

How Do I Add an RSS Feed Using IE7?
Open IE7, and you should see a toolbar in the upper right. Notice the gray RSS feed icon. When you navigate to a Web site with an active RSS feed, the icon on your toolbar will turn orange. Click this orange icon to subscribe to the site’s RSS feed.

How Do I See My Updated Content?
RSS content is accessed from the Favorites Center folder on the IE7 toolbar. Click the star-shaped icon on the left to see a list of your RSS feeds. Click again on a particular feed to access a list of its latest headlines.

Where Do I find RSS Feeds?
See this article on WikiHow for more information on RSS feeds. It also lists several RSS feed directories. Microsoft also has numerous feeds available for its products. Search the main site or this list of Office feeds for the latest news updates and user tips on Microsoft Office products.

In August we’ll explore how to use IE7 and Outlook 2007 together to manage your syndicated feeds.

Learn New SharePoint 2007 Features
Interactive training let you learn at your own pace

For users wanting to get ahead of the game in the SharePoint Server 2007 migration, Microsoft has a browser-based training program available at http://tinyurl.com/6cdffl. Download, install and start learning about the Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 environment, and you’ll be ready to take advantage of all the new and exciting features.

After the upgrade scheduled for fall of 2008, sites will be transferred over into the new environment as both users and site administrators become comfortable with the new interface.

SharePoint Server 2007 includes a new look and several new features such as blogs, wikis and RSS feeds while adding new options to such current features as document libraries, page and site templates and more. There’s also much more integration with Office 2007, like enhanced support for Excel, InfoPath forms and Outlook calendar sharing.

The training topics guide you step-by-step from beginning through advanced features. You are free to go at your own pace and learn as much or as little as you need to get started using SharePoint Server 2007.

To see a full list of the new features in SharePoint Server 2007, go to http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepointserver/FX101758881033.aspx.
