NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Use the Virtual Computing Lab 24/7

FREE software for ECU students

Starting again in fall, both campus and distance education students will be able to remotely access certain required software programs from ECU’s Virtual Computing Lab (VCL). This means you may not need to buy the software required for your classes!

After requesting a reservation, simply connect from a residence hall, Greenville apartment or even from your parents’ house out-of-town using the Remote Desktop Connection program included with XP or Vista or an SSH program for Linux machines. There is also a connection available for Mac users. Go to the Virtual Computing Lab connection information page to learn more about connection requirements and remote connection software for your computer.

Professors will let you know if an image has been created for their class. You can also request a VCL session to use certain generic images that contain the Microsoft Office 2007 suite, SAS, SPSS, Mathematica, AutoCAD, Adobe design programs and more.

Please note that, while the VCL is open seven days a week, 24 hours a day, students are encouraged to make a reservation to avoid waiting times or delays. Also remember that when you are finished with a remote session, the VCL staff asks that you log out so others who are waiting can use the image when you are finished.

TIPS AND HOW-TO'S

Subscribe to RSS Feeds Using Internet Explorer 7

Information delivered straight to you

NOTE: Internet Explorer 7 is NOT compatible with IDXWeb. Do NOT download this version of Internet Explorer is you use IDXWeb software. However, in coming issues of the Technology Digest, we'll discuss other ways to subscribe to RSS feeds.

Wikis, blogs, RSS feeds. Many of the upgrades ECU is implementing this summer include these very useful tools. But are these features easy to use? Can they make your office more productive? Should you learn to use them?

The answer is Yes! Yes! YES!

Over the next several issues of Technology Digest, we’ll look at how you can use each of these tools to maximize work time and have a bit of fun along the way. This month we’ll show you how to use Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) to subscribe to RSS feeds.

What is an RSS Feed?
Just like a magazine subscription delivered to your postal mailbox, an RSS (Real Simple Syndication) feed is delivered to your computer. You only need subscribe once to an RSS feed and updates are automatically saved in the Favorites Center folder on the IE7 toolbar.

RSS feeds are usually available on sites that frequently update information, such as weblogs, online magazines or news sites. Read on to learn how you can use Internet Explorer 7 to manage this syndicated content.

How Do I Add an RSS Feed Using IE7?
Open IE7, and you should see a toolbar in the upper right. Notice the gray RSS feed icon. When you navigate to a Web site with an active RSS feed, the icon on your toolbar will turn orange. Click this orange icon to subscribe to the site’s RSS feed.

How Do I See My Updated Content?
RSS content is accessed from the Favorites Center folder on the IE7 toolbar. Click the star-shaped icon on the left to see a list of your RSS feeds. Click again on a particular feed to access a list of its latest headlines.

Where Do I find RSS Feeds?
See this article on WikiHow for more information on RSS feeds. It also lists several RSS feed directories. Microsoft also has numerous feeds available for its products. Search the main site or this list of Office feeds for the latest news updates and user tips on Microsoft Office products.

In August we’ll explore how to use IE7 and Outlook 2007 together to manage your syndicated feeds.
