Student Computer Recommendations for the Fall

The ACE initiative announces the new computer models available to students through the Dowdy Student Stores. The ThinkPad models will come with the Vista operating system, and the Mac models will come with OS X Leopard.

If a department does not have a specific requirement the students may be using both Windows (XP and Vista) and Mac computers. Instructors should keep this in mind when selecting computer applications for students to use for assignments.

For more information about student computer requirements/recommendations, available models and student computer support visit www.ecu.edu/ace.

How do I view output files in previous versions of SPSS?

The SPSS 16.0 for Windows CD (full version only) contains an application called "Legacy Viewer" which is formerly known as "SPSS 15.0 SmartViewer". If you wish to view and edit output created in previous versions of SPSS, please install the Legacy Viewer and open the older output using that application. Legacy Viewer is also available for download from the SPSS Support website at http://support.spss.com.

You will need a Technical Support login and password. To get a Technical Support login and password, choose "Login Help" from the menu, and then choose the "Request a Login" link. Once you are logged-in, choose "SPSS" under "My Product View". Next, select "Utilities", then "SPSS for Windows", and finally "Legacy Viewer".

There is no Legacy Viewer for old output (.spo) files for SPSS 16.0 for Macintosh and no plans for one to be created. We recommend either printing old output so you have a hard copy or regenerating old output in the upgraded version. If you feel strongly about having this for SPSS for Macintosh, please contact product marketing at suggest@spss.com.

Smart Classrooms

If you have questions about video conferencing, recording, streaming media resources or any other questions pertaining to the Smart Classrooms. Contact Tony Cooke (cooketo@ecu.edu; 328-9181), Smart Classrooms Coordinator, for one-on-one consulting and training appointments.

For emergency support, contact the IT Help Desk (328-9866) and a technology consultant will be dispatched quickly to assist you.

Want to Join the Virtual Computing Lab (VCL)?

On-campus and distance education students can now access software they need for their courses without having to purchase it themselves or worry that a program won't run properly on their personal computer or even come on campus to use a computer lab. Students can log into the Virtual Computing Lab from home or their residence hall 24x7 and choose software from an “image” designed for their course(s) by their professor.

Faculty interested in adding their courses to the VCL should contact Susan Thornton (thorntons@ecu.edu) with software requests. If your software requires licenses, the number of licenses available will be the maximum number of student connections allowed at one time.
