The 4 "W's" - What, Where, When, and Who - of Smart Classrooms
Instructional Faculty and Staff:
Welcome to the Spring 2008 semester! We wish you success in your teaching and learning activities, and want to provide whatever assistance we can to make your upcoming semester a smooth one. For those of you planning to teach in a Smart Classroom, please review the information below that we hope will prove helpful.
WHAT is a Smart Classroom?
"Smart Classrooms" is a term applied to teaching, learning and meeting spaces equipped with a variety of technologies used for instruction and presentation. A basic configuration may include a computer (or just a computer connection for your laptop) connected to an LCD projector with a projection screen, while a more sophisticated configuration could also add in a SMART Board interactive whiteboard, touch panel for controlling equipment, video cameras, and an audio amplification system. Additional resouces like VCR's and DVD players may also be found in some rooms.
WHERE are Smart Classrooms located?
The number of Smart Classrooms at ECU has grown to more than 200 rooms spread over 16 buildings on Main Campus and the Health Sciences Campus. Visit the Smart Classrooms Web site at www.ecu.edu/smartclassroom and click “Smart Classroom Information” in the left menu to search the database and view specific room locations and available equipment.
Clarification - WHEN can I reserve a Smart Classroom?
If you are interested in reserving a Smart Classroom for a course or special event such as an orientation session, workshop or guest speaker, please follow the reservation procedures your department has established for scheduling rooms. Please consult your departmental administrator if you are unsure of your department's specific procedures.
WHO do I contact if I have questions or need help using a Smart Classroom?
There are a variety of options of which you can take advantage to become familiar with Smart Classrooms:
- Visit the Smart Classrooms Web site at www.ecu.edu/smartclassroom and click “Training & Tutorials” in the left menu. This Web page directs you to the ITCS Tutorial Library for helpful “how to” and “quick start” guides.
- Contact Tony Cooke (cooketo@ecu.edu; 328-9181), Smart Classrooms Coordinator, for one-on-one consulting and training appointments.
- Contact your departmental technology consultants for Smart Classroom tours and support specific to your building. If you're interested in teaching in a building other than that in which your department is housed, touch base with that department's technology consultant as well. He/she will be most familiar with the Smart Classrooms in their building and can help make your teaching experience a smooth one.
- For emergency support, contact the IT Help Desk (328-9866) and a technology consultant will be dispatched quickly to assist you.
NOTE: Please contact Tony Cooke (cooketo@ecu.edu; 328-9181) or your departmental technology consultant about burned-out projector lamps and other emergency equipment repairs; ITCS will remedy these problems as Smart Classrooms funds are available. |

Using Your Piratedrive Networked Storage Space
ITCS provides faculty, staff and students networked storage space, called Piratedrive, for storing and backing up important files. Your Piratedrive space is created when your e-mail account is established. Faculty and staff have 500 megabytes of Piratedrive space, students have 50 megabytes, and campus departments have 5 gigabytes.
Windows Users:
You can access your Piratedrive by logging into the INTRA domain with your PirateID and passphrase and clicking on "My Computer". You will notice another drive letter designated as (U:). This "U" drive is your Piratedrive and will be available to you from any Windows computer logged into the INTRA domain and through OneStop.
Mac Users:
All Macintosh users can connect via their OneStop.
- Log into OneStop via the web.
- Select the Piratedrive link.
- You can upload, download, delete and navigate through the folders through the OneStop web interface.
OS X users can also access it:
- Through the Finder:
Go > Connect to Server (Apple+K on your keyboard)
Type in the address using the following format:
smb://piratedrive.intra.ecu.edu/facultystaff/pirateid/
At the login prompt enter the following:

- Username = PirateID
- Password = Piratemail passphrase
2. Through Fetch:
Hostname = piratedrive.intra.ecu.edu
Username = intra\pirateid
Connect using = FTP
Password: Piratemail passphrase
3. Through FireFox and Netscape:
In the address field, type in the following substituting where indicated:
Address = ftp://intra\pirateid@piratedrive.intra.ecu.edu
When it asks for your password that will be your email password.
Please note that you can download items by clicking on them but you cannot upload any items.
For more information, and to view FAQ's and a tutorial on

| ACE Student Computer Purchasing Program ACE is a comprehensive campus-wide effort addressing the support of student computers in the academic environment. Some academic programs require their students to have access to a specific computer as a part of their degree curriculum. ACE communicates computer/software requirements/recommendations to students, and works with the Dowdy Student Stores to provide affordable pricing on computers and software for ECU students.
If your department has computer requirements/recommendations for your students, please contact Charlie Justice (justicec@ecu.edu; 328-9128) so we can include you in our comprehensive listing of departmental computer requirements.
