WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?
ECU ID and PirateID Explained

In compliance with the Identity Theft Protection Act, all faculty, staff and students are now assigned an ECU ID, or employee number.  This unique identifier, formerly called the Banner ID, replaces the Social Security number in ECU’s systems. Anyone can look up his/her ECU ID by logging in to OneStop and selecting the link, “What is my ECU (Banner) ID?” from the “Tools” page.

Example of an ECU IDB0093421

PirateID is the term used to refer to a user ID at ECU.  Used with a passphrase, faculty, staff and students log on to many of ECU’s computer resources, such as office computers, Piratemail, OneStop and Blackboard, with the PirateID.  Faculty and staff PirateIDs are created by using the last name with enough letters of the first name to make the term unique.  PirateIDs can be searched in the Outlook Address Book by last name or by going to www.ecu.edu and selecting the mail icon in the upper right corner of the screen.

A NEW DAY WITH OFFICE 2007
Microsoft Office 2007 now supported by ITCS

An upgrade to the Microsoft Office 2007 application suite still includes all the old favorites, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.  But now there’s more!  The Office 2007 suite also includes:

OneNote – Consolidate your doodles, ideas and thoughts into one electronic project notebook
Groove – Collaborate online with your team
Publisher – Create professional-looking print flyers, brochures and more
InfoPath – Design dynamic forms

There are many exciting new features in Office 2007.  For example, users are now able to convert Word or Excel
documents to PDF format using the Microsoft Save As PDF or XPS add-in. The compatibility pack allows Office 2003 users
to open, edit and save documents, workbooks and presentations in the file formats new to Microsoft Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint 2007.

New ECU replacement computers include the Office 2007 application suite. To upgrade from Office 2003 to Office 2007 on your existing office computer, log in to the ITCS Help Desk and complete the Microsoft Products Software Request form, located under the “Request Software” category on the left of the screen or contact the Help Desk at 328-9866 or toll free 800-340-7081.

NVIVO 8 NOW AVAILABLE/NVIVO 7 LICENSES EXPIRING
Licenses available for either version

NVivo software, from QSR International, is a qualitative analysis software package available for download to ECU faculty.  ITCS has approximately 300-400 licenses available for individual users, and the software is also available for students and other users in ECU computer labs.

Note that NVivo 7 licenses will soon expire, but renewals are available for those who wish to continue to use version 7.  Submit an online request by going to http://help.ecu.edu and completing the online form, NVivo Software Request (Individual Use), located in the “Request Software” section on the left of the screen to receive the new license number or to request NVivo 8.

NVivo 7 and NVivo 8 Information:

  • NVivo Versions 7 and 8 will run simultaneously on the same computer, so there is no need to remove 7 if you decide to install 8.
  • NVivo 8 runs on VISTA computers.  NVivo 7 will run on a VISTA machine if the appropriate patch is installed.  To download the VISTA patch, go to QSR’s Web site (see the link below).
  • Both NVivo 7 and 8 will operate on an Intel-based Mac computer using the software products, Parallels and Boot Camp (Boot Camp is included in the latest Mac OS X version, Leopard).  These programs allow users to install Windows on a Mac and switch between both Mac and Windows operating systems.
  • Neither NVivo 7 nor NVivo8 will operate on Mac computers running Microsoft Virtual PC.

For more information on NVivo 8 please go to QSR’s Web site at
http://www.qsrinternational.com/products_nvivo.aspx.

PASSWORD TIP FROM IT SECURITY:

Don't use information related to
yourself as a password

Read on to find out why strong passphrases are important.

Students at a school in London exploited a teacher's poor password selection to access grades and other school records. The teacher had used his daughter's name as a password, but became suspicious when students made reference to an excursion which had not yet been announced.  So he changed
his password to the registration number of his car, which was parked outside the school every day. When he received complaints from other teachers about grades being leaked, he changed the password again, this time to his postcode. The students in question cracked this within days, too.*
