The EC Scholars Award

If you're a candidate for the EC Scholar award from East Carolina University, you've probably got quite a story. You're one of the best students to ever come out of your high school. Your test scores are through the roof. Your list of extracurricular activities is as long as your arm. Your family, friends, and teachers all know you 're going to be a huge success. There's a crowd of colleges vying for your attention, and they've all got a story to tell you.

East Carolina has a story, too . . .

one of success. We can tell you about the tens of thousands of alumni who have found success in the boardroom and in the ballpark, in the classroom and the concert hall, in the library and in the lab. We can tell you about the faculty and researchers whose research and discoveries are making real-world contributions to the life of the state and the nation.

We can also tell you the stories of our EC Scholars. Did you hear about the Scholar whose trip to Russia changed her life? Or the woman who's premed AND training to be a paramedic? How about the student who's doing graduate-level research as a freshman? Or the freshman who has already been accepted to med school?

The EC Scholar award is offered to the best of our entering freshman class, those who have what it takes to write their own huge success stories. This is the most prestigious scholarship offered at East Carolina. It is worth up to $10,000 per year for four years.

undefinedThe money is nice, but there's a lot more. EC Scholars get a college experience that goes way beyond the ordinary and includes rigorous academics, leadership training, community service, art and cultural events, and good old-fashioned fun. You will travel the world and tromp through the woods. You will get the best professors and work with top researchers. You will be part of a tight-knit group of friends and colleagues who share your interests and dedication.

And you will gain the experience, skills, and knowledge you will need to succeed. For those interested in becoming a doctor, the Early Assurance Scholar program can hold a place for you at the Brody School of Medicine for when you have finished your undergraduate work.

Early Assurance Scholars

For those headed for a career in medicine, East Carolina offers an additional opportunity: You can get into medical school before you even begin your first day of class as an undergraduate. Through the Early Assurance Program, up to four seats in the Brody School of Medicine are reserved four years in advance for interested EC Scholars. In addition to all the benefits of being an EC Scholar, medical school faculty members advise and guide the Early Assurance Scholars throughout their undergraduate years.

Going Places - Study Abroad

Study abroad is definitely one of the highlights of the program; all EC Scholars are encouraged to participate. Scholars work with their advisers to design a foreign-study program tailored to their individual interests and goals. Scholars may choose a faculty-led summer travel adventure, a semester at a foreign university, or another type of international exchange. The EC Scholar award may be used for study abroad, and students may apply for additional funds. Early Assurance Program are also named and receive the same experiences. Although their acceptance into the medical school is not guaranteed, the alternates will be very competitive candidates for admission because of their participation in this program.

Taking the Lead

EC Scholars will be leaders and role models on campus, in their profession, in the community, and in society, so you need to be ready. ECU's Leadership Development Program will teach you effective leadership skills and styles through a number of training sessions and workshops. These are skills that will be invaluable no matter what route you take through life.

A Friend Next Door

Freshmen understand they are required to live in the Honors/International Student Scholars residence hall. It is one of the most important and popular features of the EC Scholars program. Scholars live and learn in the company of other highly motivated Honors students. It's like having a ready-made group of friends waiting for you when you get to ECU. You participate as a group in seminars, workshops, team-building activities, and special projects designed to develop a real sense of closeness and camaraderie.

Now That's Entertainment

You can't learn everything in a classroom, and Scholars enjoy a number of outdoor adventures and social and cultural events that offer friends, fun, and fellowship. Incoming Scholars tackle the ECU Ropes Course and look forward to trips, retreats, and other activities offered throughout the year. ECU is a lively center for the performing arts, and Scholars can often attend plays, concerts, and shows at no charge.

Service to Others

EC Scholars are selected, in part, for their demonstrated commitment to service. During their first semester at ECU, they are introduced to a variety of service projects. Working with faculty in a special seminar, EC Scholars develop individual service plans, create a group service project, and get involved in a number of campus and community outreach programs.
