Mission Statement

It is the purpose of the Department of History to make a vital contribution to liberal education through study of the human past, to prepare students for advanced work in the professions, and to promote research in history. In its effort to achieve these challenging objectives, the Department seeks to develop and maintain excellence in academic programs, to retain a competent and productive faculty, and to support scholarship, research, and publication. It is the function of the Department to advise and instruct undergraduate and graduate students, both major and non-major, and to encourage their participation in the professional and cultural aspects of the discipline. The Department of History will coordinate its programs with other disciplines to understand, in historical perspective, the world in which the students live.
