Dr. Jeffery Elwell, Dean 252-328-1421 elwellj@ecu.edu JEFFERY SCOTT ELWELL is Professor and Dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communication at East Carolina University. Prior to accepting his current position, he was Professor and Chair of the Department of Theatre Arts at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Executive Artistic Director of the Nebraska Repertory Theatre (1999-2004), as Professor and Chair of the Department of Theatre and Director of the Joan C. Edwards Performing Arts Center at Marshall University (1996-99); and Professor and Director of Theatre at Mississippi State University (1989-96). He received his Ph.D. from Southern Illinois University in 1986 and has a Mississippi Arts Commission Playwriting Fellowship, a Nebraska Arts Council Individual Artists Fellowship, a Tennessee Williams Scholarship, and an NEH Summer Seminar Fellowship. He has received almost $700,000 in grants and fellowships. Professional theatres in Chicago, Los Angeles, Memphis, New Orleans, and New York as well as Australia, Canada, Poland, and Sweden have produced his plays, including twenty-three productions of his plays in New York. THE ART OF DATING was a winner in the 1995 Off Off-Broadway Original Short Play Festival and EVENING EDUCATION, was a winner in 2000. Samuel French publishes both. Heinemann publishes his monologue, THE NIGHT WE MET in Monologues for Men, Vol. 2. Two of his monologues are in BASEBALL MONOLOGUES, also published by Heinemann. Playscripts, Inc publishes his adaptation of Dickens’s A CHRISTMAS CAROL. He has directed more than fifty-five plays, including THE GUYS, PROOF, OTHELLO and AMERICAN BUFFALO. He served as the Producer and Director of the Nebraska Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Signature Event, one of 15 events held nationally. In the Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) he has served as the Conference Planner (1999, Toronto), on Conference Planning Committees, as Chair, Vice-Chair and Conference Planner of the Playwrights Program; he was a member of the board of directors of the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST) and served on the Nominations Committee; for the Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival (KC/ACTF) he served as Region IV Playwriting Awards Committee Chair, Vice-Chair and on the Executive Committee; in the Southeastern Theatre Conference (SETC) he served as Chair and Vice-Chair of the Playwriting Committee, of the SETC New Play Project; and as a member of the Editorial Board of SOUTHERN THEATRE. |
Dr. Susan Beck-Frazier, Associate Dean 252-328-1421 beckfraziers@ecu.edu Susan Beck-Frazier serves as the college liaison for Institutional Planning, Research, and Effectiveness and SEDONA (publication data base), responds to Student Affairs issues, collaborates on strategic plan assessment, assists in compiling reports, chairs ad hoc meetings, and attends various leadership group meetings at the request of the dean (Distance Education Advisory Council, University Research Council, Associate Deans Council, and the Provost’s Council for Collaboration on Teacher Education). Beck-Frazier also continues to serve as the Assistant Director for Student Services at the ECU School of Music. She holds a Ed.D in Educational Leadership, a MM in Music Education, and a BM in Music Education from East Carolina University. Beck-Frazier joined the music education faculty of the School of Music in 2001. She presents workshops and research poster sessions for state, regional, national and international conferences including the Music Educators National Conference, the American Music Therapy Association, the American Choral Directors Association and the Annual Hawaii International Conference on Arts and Humanities. Former piano teacher, children’s choir director and public school general music/choral/beginning strings teacher.

Mr. John Kramar, Associate Dean 252-328-2481 kramarj@ecu.edu John Kramar serves on a variety of committees, responding to faculty and student issues, and serving as curriculum liaison for the college. Kramar joined the voice faculty of the School of Music in 1998, where he also serves as co-director of the opera theatre program. The baritone has performed with the Sarasota, Nashville, Washington Summer and Santa Fe operas; the North Carolina, Jupiter, Erie Philharmonic and Springfield symphonies; and with the Middle Tennessee Choral Society, Bach Choir of Pittsburgh, and the National Chorale, among many other performances. Kramar has been a member of the award-winning New York Vocal Arts Ensemble since 1994, and is featured on their recordings of Beethoven's folk song settings and Schubert's solo vocal quartets on the Arabesque label. He has been on the directing staff of Chautauqua Opera since 2003.

Mr. Michael Crane, Assistant Dean of Marketing & Outreach 252-328-5386 cranemi@ecu.edu Michael Crane manages the day-to-day operations of the S. Rudolph Alexander Performing Arts Series, Family Fare series, and Arts Smart series. He delivers the award-winning REVUE magazine, and works on special projects, such as the School of Art and Design’s award-winning recruitment viewbook.

Ms. Gloria Bailey, Assistant to the Dean (Diversity and Outreach) 252-328-1421 baileygl@ecu.edu Gloria Bailey serves as Assistant to the Dean for Outreach and Diversity. Her duties include assisting with the annual implementation and promotion of event programs such as S. Rudolph Alexander Performing Art Series, Family Fare and Arts Smart. She also assists with press releases and public service announcements and serves as liaison to the community in promoting culturally diverse programs. Bailey has work and volunteer experience in the design industry, senior sales and national government museum public programs. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Wayne State University-College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts.

Ms. Mary Jane Gaddis, Director of College Development 252-328-1268 gaddism@ecu.edu Mary Jane Gaddis has 28 years of administrative experience in the educational setting. Before coming to work for ECU's Academic Affairs office in 1995, she held positions with the N.C. State Department of Public Instruction, Pitt County Schools, and two years in the private sector with a small research and development firm. She served as the assistant to the dean and the director of development in the School of Music from 1996 to 2004, and been a member of the staff of the College of Fine Arts in Communication since its formation. She recently was named the Director of Development for the College.

Mr. Michael B. Dixon, Instructional Technology Consultant 252-328-6567 dixonm@ecu.edu web sites: consultant-related page || professional/personal (music composition) Michael Dixon serves as the instructional technology consultant (ITC) to all faculty within the four schools of the College. He also represents the college by serving in ECU's Technology Advisory Council. He provides solutions for faculty who desire technology integration into their classroom teaching, online instruction, and assistance with online course/program development. He also works with faculty to develop specialized course materials in various formats, including CD, DVD video, podcasts, and content for online distribution. Additionally, he researches new/emerging technologies and daily industry developments to stay current on educational technology and surrounding fields. He also serves as a part-time "teaching instructor" for the School of Music, currently teaching an online course on American popular music. He received both a Masters (1994) and Bachelors (1992) of music degree in Theory/Composition from East Carolina University. Degree emphases included traditional/electronic composition, music technology, and music business. Prior to becoming the ITC for the College in 1998, he worked at the ECU School of Music as media technician (instructional technology support person, chief recording engineer/stage manager, opera theatre technical director, publications designer/typesetter) and taught various courses (Music Appreciation, Basic Music Skills) as a part-time adjunct instructor. He has also published articles and reviews in numerous technology-related periodicals including several papers published by Knight-Ridder, St. Paul Pioneer Press, Macworld Magazine, MacAddict Magazine, MacPressen (Sweden), MacFormat (England), and GameWEEK.
