POSITION DESCRIPTION
The University
East Carolina University (ECU) has served the people of North Carolina and the nation for over 100 years. From modest beginnings as a school for training teachers, ECU has emerged as a national research university with an enrollment of nearly 26,000.
Today, East Carolina is the third largest constituent institution of the University of North Carolina System and currently offers 104 bachelor’s degree programs, 74 master’s degree programs, 4 specialist degree programs, an MD program, and 17 doctoral programs in our ten colleges and schools. With a mission of teaching, research, and service, East Carolina University is a dynamic institution connecting people and ideas, finding solutions to problems, and seeking the challenges of the future.
Greenville, NC
Greenville is a major industrial and economic center for Eastern North Carolina — a center for education, industry, health care, and culture. The City covers over 31.8 square miles and has a population of approximately 72,233.
Greenville is located in the north central coastal plain region of eastern North Carolina, approximately 85 miles east of Raleigh, the capital city of North Carolina. Greenville is approximately 87 miles west of the Atlantic Ocean and approximately 265 miles south of our nation's capital, Washington, DC (See Greenville, NC Chamber of Commerce website posted on this website).
School of Dentistry
ECU has established the School of Dentistry, housed within the Division of Health Sciences with the Brody School of Medicine, College of Nursing, College of Allied Health Sciences, and the Laupus Health Sciences Library. With this initiative, ECU stands poised to be a leader in dental education in the same tradition as the medical, nursing, and allied health schools on our Health Sciences campus. ECU is committed to educating primary care dentists who choose to practice in the rural/underserved areas of North Carolina from the mountains to the coast. Smaller class sizes and the innovative senior year educational experiences in service learning centers, provide graduates with a rich, clinically-based education, an appreciation of research, and enhanced opportunities for students and faculty to interact.
The Dean
The Dean is responsible for all educational programs of the school including those offered in affiliated settings for clinical dental education. Educational programs now under development consist of the Doctor of Dental Surgery degree, as well as the residency programs (Advanced Education is Dentistry and Pediatric Dentistry). The Dean is responsible for curriculum development and delivery; selection and graduation of students, building a faculty and leadership team; securing accreditation of the school and its programs; and, overseeing the construction of a new building. The Dean is additionally responsible for the supervision of the General Practice Residency program in general dentistry.
The Dean represents the school in key groups and councils dealing with plans and policies for dental education on a local and statewide basis including appropriate individuals and groups at ECU, the North Carolina Dental Society, the Old North State Dental Society, and the Area Health Education Center program. At the national level, the Dean represents the school on related committees and councils of the American Dental Association and the American Dental Education Association. The Dean is responsible for all operational issues for the Dental school including the budgets and management of space and facilities. This includes preparation, recommendation, and supervision of the budgets; and responsibility for the planning and administration of the central dental facility, as well as, service learning sites. In addition, the Dean is responsible for oversight, management, and performance of the Faculty and Student Practices.
