Medical Simulation and Patient Safety Laboratory
Our Medical Simulation and Patient Safety Laboratory, located just above the Emergency Department in the administrative suite, provides the ability to simulate a fully functional resuscitation room.
The Emergency Care Simulator is a computer-driven, high-fidelity, life-sized mannequin that opens it's eyes, has vital signs, breathes, has breath sounds, heart tones, pulses, and a transmitted voice via microphone. It is preprogrammed with patient profiles, emergency care scenarios, and sophisticated models of physiology and pharmacology that allow it to accurately mirror human responses to physiologic alterations and therapy.
Scenarios mimic real-life situations in which the emergency medicine resident is given an opportunity to reason through a clinical problem and make diagnostic and treatment decisions. This environment provides the resident with a life-like simulator response, direct instructor/learner interaction, and the opportunity for repetition and immediate performance feedback. Simulated exercises allow emergency medicine faculty to teach and assess knowledge and skills, decision making, code organization, team management, and assist the resident physician in building confidence and competency in acute care situations.
The purchase of the METI Emergency Care Simulator (ECS) was funded by the Pitt Memorial Hospital Foundation. Enhancements of the Medical Simulation and Patient Safety Laboratory have been made possible by the Eastern Area Health Education Center.
