HUMS 7004 Ethics and Research:
Humanities and Basic Medical Sciences

Graduate Course: Research Ethics
We offer a course in the responsible conduct of research open to students pursuing a PhD in any ECU program.  This semester-long course addresses ethical issues that arise in the following nine areas: data acquisition, management, sharing, and ownership; conflict of interest and commitment; human subjects; animal welfare; research misconduct; publication practices and responsible authorship; mentor/trainee responsibilities; peer review; and collaborative science.

Objectives:

I. To raise students’ awareness and understanding of some of the moral, legal, and social issues related to the conduct of research.
II. To develop students’ ability to critically analyze difficult ethical situations and to resolve them successfully and appropriately.
III. To imbue students with a sense of the professional, institutional and societal responsibilities associated with the conduct of research.
