The Running Assessment Clinic At East Carolina University (RACE)

RACE is a unique center that provides a clinical and biomechanical analysis of your running. We perform a comprehensive evaluation in order to determine if the alignment, flexibility and strength of your legs affect your running biomechanics. This information also helps evaluate any injuries you may have related to running.

Clinical Measures

Detailed measurements of your hips, knees and feet will be taken by an experienced physical therapist. Further measures of muscle strength and extensibility will be recorded in order to determine if your performance or injuries may be related to changes in your anatomical composition or muscular performance.

Motion Analysis

Three-dimensional running analysis consists of measuring the movement patterns of your legs as you run on a 75 foot runway with small reflective markers on your legs. Forces in your legs and joints will also be measured with forceplates in the ground. A combination of this information allows the clinicians to compare your data and determine asynchronous or atypical mechanics.

Videotaping is also completed while running on the treadmill in order to confirm findings from the biomechanical analysis.

Injury History

A detailed history of injuries related to running will be obtained from you during your visit. This information will be used to help determine if your body structure and/or running biomechanics are related to your current or past injuries.

Report

A detailed report is generated and will be provided to you and fully explained during a follow-up visit. At that time, specific recommendations will be discussed that may help resolve pain or improve your performance. Recommendations may consist of specific exercises for strengthening, stretching, balance and coordination; retraining running technique; or shoe type and foot orthotics. You will also be provided with a video of your running which may be useful in evaluating your progress.

Cost

The cost of an evaluation at RACE is $350. This includes:

  • Two hour evaluation
  • Follow-up consultation
  • DVD of your running
  • Report with specific recommendations
