Professional Interest
My research focus has been on the initiation of movement from quiet stance. This has involved the analysis of the EMG and ground reaction forces that relate to the intended velocity of the initiation of gait. These parameters are sensitive to hypokinesia, as seen in patients with Parkinson's disease, and are also modulated when stepping over obstacles or to a sensory perturbation while stepping. Initiation of movement from quiet stance may be a useful tool in evaluating performance following drug intervention or surgery or maybe in identifying older clients at risk of falling.
