The Announce list's sole purpose is to allow East Carolina University faculty and staff to electronically post messages about ECU news, maintenance, deadlines, campus events, facilities, opportunities, and related information. The Announce list is NOT a discussion list! To discuss ideas, views, opinions, etc. related to ECU, please subscribe to ECUVIEWS or ECU-L.

How did the list come to be?
The Announce list was created by Howard Speight in 1996 when he heard "I need a way to inform the campus community about network outages/upgrades" etc. This was back when the fiber network was first being installed. Expanding on that premise, Howard wanted to allow all faculty and staff to communicate information that the University community might be interested in. The Announce list was originally created with all faculty and staff userids on ECUVM being subscribed with pretty liberal options. This caused some problems and eventually the list evolved to its current state.

Current state of the list
Users are no longer added to Announce automatically but must request a subscription. The subscription request must originate from your Exchange e-mail account. Additionally, the list is no longer moderated. In other words, messages sent to the list are distributed IMMEDIATELY! Each individual is responsible for knowing and adhering to the rules regarding Announce.
