Find It! (360 Link), OpenURL, ILL, and ILLiad Over the summer, Joyner Library switched its OpenURL resolver from SFX to 360 Link. The "Find It!" button, which you can see in many databases and even in the catalog, uses this tool. FindIt! searches many of Joyner Library's databases and indexes in an attempt to find you full-text articles online. It uses the OpenURL standard to accomplish this and to transfer citation data to the library's catalog and interlibrary loan (ILL) system, ILLiad. When you search in many of Joyner Library's online databases and indexes, you will see the FindIt! button next to your citation. When you click it, a new webpage will open. If the full-text of the article is available in Joyner's collections, FindIt! will give you a list of one or more databases that should have the article for you; simply input the citation details in the search fields if they are not automatically entered, click FindIt!, and follow subsequent on-screen instructions to immediately access the full-text article on your screen, often in the PDF file format. To read PDF files, you will need a PDF file viewer; you may download the free Adobe Acrobat Reader program at this ECU ITCS webpage. If the article is not found full-text in any of the library's databases, FindIt! next allows you to easily search Joyner Library's Catalog. By clicking on the Joyner Catalog entry, Joyner's print and some electronic sources are automatically searched. You will be able to tell if Joyner owns the material you are seeking, where it is located in the library (stacks, current periodicals, microfilm, North Carolina Collection, etc.), and if the material is currently available. - If your article is found in print at Joyner Library, you will need to come to the library to make a copy of the article. If you are a registered Distance Education patron who lives outside of Pitt County, please see the Distance Education section below for an exclusion to this requirement.
- If the article is on a medical topic, you also may find checking the Laupus Library Catalog helpful. If the article is found in print at Laupus, all ECU patrons not affiliated with the Division of Health Sciences, whether On-Campus or Distance Education, may either go to Laupus Library to immediately gain access to the article in print or you may request it via ILL (see below).
If no full-text article is available, and you discover from checking the catalog that Joyner does not own the issue of the journal that you want in a print or microformat, you may then click on the Joyner ILL link from the FindIt! menu. This new feature will open Joyner Library's interlibrary loan processing program, ILLiad. (You will need to have created an ILLiad account to log-in; if you do not have a Joyner ILLiad account, see below.) Once you log-in to ILLiad, a request form will automatically open with all of the citation information already filled into the correct fields. Simply review the form to ensure everything is complete, being sure to enter any comments in the Notes field that might be helpful to the ILL staff, and click "Submit". If you keep the ILLiad Main Menu open in one window while continuing your searching in another window, you will not have to log-in to ILLiad again the next time you click on FindIt!'s Joyner ILL link. Though this new feature speeds your entering of the request and increases the accuracy of citations, please do not forget to check the Joyner Library catalog to see if you have immediate access to the article in print format; if Joyner owns the print version, and you are not a Distance Education student, the ILL staff must cancel your request and you will have lost hours or days of possible research time. - If you do not have a Joyner ILLiad account, simply click on "First Time Users Click Here" and follow the on-screen instructions to create your account. Please note, only those eligible for Joyner ILL can use this service; if you are in the Division of Health Science, please contact the Document Delivery staff of Laupus Library.
- Unfortunately, if you have to create an ILLiad account, the citation data from your search is lost by the program, so you will need to leave ILLiad's Main Menu open and go back to the FindIt! search screen and click on the ILL link again. Be careful, though, some databases automatically timeout after so long without use. To ensure that your search results are not lost while registering for ILLiad, you may want to click back to the database and click on another article every so often.
Distance Education Because registered Distance Education patrons who live outside of Pitt County are not able to use Joyner Library, interlibrary loan and the FindIt! link to Joyner ILL may be used to request materials owned in Joyner Library's print collections. If you qualify for this service, when you use the FindIt! link to Joyner ILL, please also check the library catalog and copy the call number and location information into the competed ILLiad form; doing so greatly speeds the processing of your requests because they then go directly to the ILL Document Delivery coordinator for processing rather than going through the ILL Borrowing copyright review process first. For more information on ILL services to Distance Education patrons, please visit ILL Document Delivery. Help and More Information For help using ILLiad, please contact the ILL staff or visit the ILL Help page. For help using Joyner Library's databases and general research help, include SFX, contact the Reference Department or Ask-A-Librarian. FindIt! is able to connect the various databases and indexes to the catalog and to ILLiad using the OpenURL computer standard. For general information on the software that powers FindIt!, 360 Link, and the OpenURL protocol that allows it to work, you may visit SerialsSolutions 360 Link and Wikipedia's entry on OpenURL. |
