Getting Started FAQ

This page covers what ILL is, who can use the ILL service from Joyner Library, why and how you register with Joyner ILLiad, and how to manage your ILLiad account information, including your username and password.

Answers to others questions on how to use ILLiad and the policies governing ILL may be found on the BorrowingDocument Delivery, and Help webpages.

What is Joyner Interlibrary Loan? What is Joyner Document Delivery?
Please visit the ILL Borrowing and ILL Document Delivery pages for a more detailed answer on what these services are.

Can I use Joyner ILL?
Joyner ILL Borrowing services are available only to current ECU students, faculty (emeritus included), and staff for whom Joyner Library is their primary campus library. Please visit Joyner ILL or Laupus ILL to determine which is your primary library.

Joyner ILL services are not available to ECU alumni, area residents, those in the Division of Health Sciences, or to spouses, partners, or children of eligible Joyner patrons.

What is ILLiad?

ILLiad is the electronic system used to receive, process, and deliver your interlibrary loan requests. The name ILLiad is an acronym for "InterLibrary Loan internet accessible database".

Why do I have to register and create an ILLiad account?

Creating a personal ILLiad account allows you to securely make requests, track the status of your requests, access electronically delivered articles, and maintain a history of your requests -- all from the comfort of your computer, whenever is most convenient for you. Having this account also frees you from having to enter your contact information every time you make a request.

What should my username and password be?
Your username can be anything you like, such as your name, abbreviations, or any alphanumeric code -- even your PirateID. Your password also can be anything you like, though we recommend that you follow good security practices.

Why do you need all of my personal information?
We need to know how to contact you via ECU e-mail, phone, and mail in case we need to inform you that materials have arrived for you or are overdue and to verify your identity since sometimes multiple people have the same names.

We need to know your department/major and university status for statistical analysis and collection development decisions. Also, some services are only provided to those of a certain status.

What is your privacy policy?

The ILL staff respect and guard your privacy. Joyner Library specifically endorses the Library Bill of Rights (American Library Association) and Statement on Professional Ethics (American Library Association) and complies with North Carolina State law governing the Confidentiality of Library User Records  (N.C.G.S. §125, art. 19).

Though the ILL staff shares some data with other librarians and other libraries, we share as little as possible. Usually what data we provide is aggregated: for example, the total number of books borrowed by department/major during 2005-2006.

Be aware, though, that unlike the circulation system, your history of materials borrowed and accessed through ILLiad is maintained for your convenience and in compliance with copyright and university accounting requirements. Under certain court orders or other government demands, your request history may be provided to law enforcement personnel or others if so ordered.

How much does an ILL request cost?
Joyner Library does not pass any costs related to this service on to its patrons. The only time there is a charge passed along is if you damage or lose a returnable item (book, microfilm reel, audio/visual item, etc.).

Although you do not pay directly for each request unless you lose or damage it, please be aware that there are significant costs associated with the service, both for Joyner Library and the libraries asked to provide materials: photocopying and shipping/mailing expenses, packaging supplies, service fees, copyright fees, staff labor, and equipment. Studies have tallied this cost at an average of between $20.00-$30.00 per request. Sometimes requests may cost the library much more than this amount because some providers charge flat fees of $25.00 or more to fill a request, plus the shipping and labor costs. If there will be a high cost to fulfill a request, the ILL staff may contact you to see if the requested material is truly needed. We are glad to provide you with as many requested items as we can, but we ask that you only request those items that you need for your research and that you can actually use in the time available for your project.

How long does ILL take? Why so long?
Unlike ordering directly from an online store, Interlibrary Loans are requests made to multiple libraries and other institutions to provide their materials for you to use. Because it can be a time intensive process and is dependent upon the generosity of others, the length of time required to obtain a loan or photocopy can vary greatly.
  • Most requests for photocopies can be filled within three-five weekdays. More obscure journals, newspapers, and other items often take over a week to locate and fulfill.
  • Books and other returnable materials (audio/visual, microfilm reels, etc.) can take as little as four days, but usually take one-two weeks. If difficult to locate, it may take weeks or months before it is obtained.
For a more complete explanation, visit this web page.

If you ever need a request filled more quickly than within several weekdays, please contact the ILL staff directly to discuss the likelihood of getting the information you need. If the exact title that you want cannot be found, the ILL staff and the Joyner Reference staff can help you locate other research materials that may satisfy your need.

How do I edit my contact information? Change my password?
To update your personal information, as you should whenever your address, phone number, ECU e-mail address, university status, or name change, you click on the "change user information" link on the ILLiad Main Menu. Some fields may not allow editing -- if you need to change those fields, please contact the ILL staff.

You may change your password as frequently as you like by clicking on the "change password" button on the ILLiad Main Menu. Be sure to also include a password hint so you can be automatically reminded of your password should you forget it.

Please remember that your ILLiad account is not currently connected to the rest of the ECU computer systems, so whenever you update those systems, you also need to manually update ILLiad.

What if I forget my password or username?

In the event that you forget your password or username, please contact the Joyner Interlibrary Loan Department. We gladly will verify your identity and inform you of your username or reset your password. When you next login to ILLiad, you will need to change your password to whatever you want and create a password hint to automatically help you should you forget your password again.
