As the depository for university records that are worthy of permanent retention, the University Archives serves the university's historical, administrative, legal, and records management needs. The University Archives also serves as the collective memory of the institution by preserving such materials as administrative papers, newspapers, minutes, departmental files, university publications, photographs and memorabilia. To this end, a feature called
ECU Memories has been developed.
In all roles, the University Archives' function is to receive, preserve, and make available to university personnel, students, researchers, and the general public primary source material relating to the university.
Use of the Archives
East Carolina University Archives is open to all ECU faculty, staff, and students, and other interested researchers. Requests via mail and telephone(252-328-0272) are also accepted, though personal visits to the Archives are encouraged. Visitors are asked to register daily with the staff and abide by the
Search Room policies. Click here to submit a reference
request via e-mail.
Photocopies may be obtained of items in the University Archives Collection. Copies are made by the staff. Collection policy prohibits the copying of restricted materials, or complete oral histories.
Photocopies of course descriptions from course catalogs may be obtained for $3.00. Patrons should provide the year of the catalog and a list of the courses. Payment is requested before services rendered.
The Search Room is equipped with a microfilm reader and a microfilm reader/printer. Copies are made by the researcher.
Most photographs in the collection may be reproduced as 5 x 7 or 8 x 10 prints. It is suggested that small images (smaller than 2" x 2") be reproduced as 5 x 7, blurring occurs at 8 x 10 reproduction. Larger non-standard size images can be reproduced as either 5 x 7 or 8 x 10 prints. However, the reproduced image may not use all the photograph paper. There may be large white margins on two sides of the image. Check the original image size to determine how an enlarged photo will fit into the new size.
We are currently unable to reproduce any images in color except by scanning.
All negatives remain the property of the University Archives.
Please indicate negative number or image number when submitting an order. Payment is requested before services rendered. Checks should be made out to Joyner Library. Cash and interdepartmental transfers are also accepted. The costs are as follows:
