Accessing Sanborn Maps

East Carolina University offers access to three sources of North Carolina Sanborn maps:

  • The North Carolina Collection has several microfilm copies of Sanborn maps from the state.  They can be viewed in the collection's microfilm room, which contains not only microfilm reader/printers, but offers researchers electronic imaging of microfilm images as well.  A list of the maps that are available on microfilm can be found here.

  • The Joyner Library offers access to the North Carolina portion of ProQuests Digital Sanborn Maps: 1967-1970 database.  The database includes digitized versions of over eleven thousand maps of 158 North Carolina cities and towns.  The easy to use interface allows  researchers ability to quickly navigate between maps, zoom in on specific sections, and compare maps from different years that are drawn from the same locale.  This database is only available to those users in the library or off campus to those who have a Pirate ID and password.

  • Joyner Library's Special Collections has Sanborn Maps of the city of Greenville (Map Collection #MC0010) for the following years: 1929, 1938, 1946.  They are available for viewing in the Special Collections reading room.
