Finding Books:

Begin with Keyword Searching.  Use the following tips:

Boolean operators:

  • AND:  narrows by combining terms
  • OR:  expands by allowing choice
  • NOT:  narrows by excluding terms

Other Search Tips:

  • *searches any variant spelling (child* finds child's, children, children's, childish, childlike)
  • ? replaces any single character (wom?n finds women or woman)
  •  The catalog does not search determiners (a, the, an) or prepositions (of, in, to, for, with) well

You can also click on the hyperlinked Subject Headings within a book record to find out approximately how many books in the library use that same term for description.

Useful subject terms (not an exhaustive list) in the area of Fashion and Costume:

Finding Journal/Magazine & Newspaper Articles:

If It's Not Fulltext:

If the database you are using has a button or link showing the words "Find It!" on it, click on that link.  You will be linked directly to Joyner Library's electronic resources and catalog.  If the article is available fulltext, you will have the option to view that article from the pop-up box.  If it is not available fulltext, you will have the option to search the Joyner Library catalog for the journal title to get the holdings information, call number, and journal location.

To find out if a specific journal, magazine or newspaper is available electronically, use the E-Journal Locator (from the Library Home Page)

Interlibrary Loan:

  • If Joyner doesn't own the journal article or book you need, request the item through Interlibrary Loan - It's free!
  • Journal articles are often delivered electronically within a few days.
  • Books may take a couple of weeks to be shipped through the mail.
